Unveiling the Future: Chengdu’s Epic ‘Floating’ Sci-Fi Museum
A Sci-Fi Marvel Touches Down in Chengdu
In a spectacle reminiscent of a seven-pointed spaceship gracefully descending on Jingrong Lake, Chengdu, an extraordinary museum emerges, capturing the essence of innovation and pop culture. Designed for the 81st World Sci-Fi Convention, this architectural marvel stands as a testament to the thriving sci-fi community in Chengdu, home to one of the most acclaimed science-fiction magazines in history.
Zaha Hadid Architects’ Grand Vision
With a footprint of nearly 60,000 square meters, equivalent to three times the size of the Sydney Opera House, the museum is the latest creation from Zaha Hadid Architects in London. The visionary design integrates an exterior envelope that seamlessly blends interior galleries with outdoor pathways, creating a dynamic and immersive experience for visitors. Paulo Flores, a project director at Zaha Hadid Architects, highlights the ever-changing and unexpected perspectives offered by the museum’s unique structure.
Swift Transformation: From Brainstorm to Reality in 12 Months
In a remarkable feat, the museum transitioned from conceptualization to inauguration within a mere 12 months, specifically to host the Worldcon, also known as the World Sci-Fi Convention. Chengdu, the capital of China’s Sichuan Province, has rapidly ascended the ranks of Chinese cities in terms of livability and prosperity, making it an ideal host for cutting-edge events.
Chengdu: A Hub of Innovation and Sci-Fi Fandom
Boasting a population of 20 million, Chengdu is an ancient city and a gateway to China’s tropical south. However, it has embraced modernity as a hub for hi-tech innovation and research. The city is also renowned for housing Science Fiction World, a periodical that, at times, holds the title of the most-read science-fiction publication globally, boasting over 300,000 subscribers.
The Museum: A Green Oasis of Futuristic Design
Senior organizer Dave MacCarty hails the museum as the “best facility by far” ever hosted by the Worldcon, surpassing conventional convention centers. Zaha Hadid Architects utilized advanced digital rendering and computing to sculpt the building’s intricate curves, waves, and points. Complying with the highest standards of China’s Green Building Program, the museum maximizes efficiencies in shading, heat dispersion, and solar power.
In crafting this sci-fi haven, Chengdu not only celebrates its rich literary history but also cements its position as a global hub for innovation and cultural vibrancy.
