Arizona Mom Throws a ‘FUN-eral’ to Celebrate Late Husband’s Life

Transforming Grief into Joy

When Katie Young tragically lost her husband Brandon at the age of 39, she faced the daunting task of planning his farewell. Instead of a traditional funeral filled with sorrow, Katie chose to honor Brandon’s memory in a way that reflected his zest for life. On May 17, she organized a ‘FUN-eral’ in Gilbert, Arizona, creating a day filled with joy, laughter, and celebration for their three children and hundreds of guests.

A Celebration of Life

Katie’s vision for the ‘FUN-eral’ was inspired by her desire to create positive memories for her children, aged 8 to 12. She didn’t want them to associate their father’s passing with grief and sadness. “All we were going to do was have these horrible memories. It didn’t feel true to Brandon,” Katie explained. Determined to honor her husband’s vibrant spirit, she planned an event that would make him proud.

The FUN-eral Experience

The ‘FUN-eral’ was anything but conventional. Guests were welcomed with a bouncy castle, Brandon’s favorite snacks like chips and dips, and party bags filled with his artwork and cherished items from his extensive record collection. Katie even set up crafting tables where attendees could create their own art, a nod to Brandon’s creative passions.

Creating Lasting Memories

The day was a reflection of Brandon’s love for life and family. Katie shared, “I have so many happy memories of Brandon. We loved to cook together; he taught me to have fun in the kitchen.” This joyous atmosphere was precisely what she aimed to replicate for their children. As Katie looked around during the event, she saw smiles on her children’s faces, knowing they would remember their father’s send-off as a celebration rather than a time of sorrow.

A Perfect Tribute

Katie’s innovative approach to the funeral not only honored Brandon’s memory but also provided a therapeutic experience for their family and friends. She said, “Brandon loved being a dad more than anything on earth. He would have been happy that his kids were happy.” The ‘FUN-eral’ allowed everyone to remember Brandon for the joy he brought into their lives, ensuring that his legacy would be one of happiness and love.

Embracing Positivity

Katie Young’s decision to hold a ‘FUN-eral’ is a powerful example of how we can choose to celebrate the lives of our loved ones. By focusing on the positive aspects of Brandon’s life and ensuring the day was filled with activities he enjoyed, Katie provided a healing and uplifting experience for all who attended. The ‘FUN-eral’ not only honored Brandon’s memory but also demonstrated the strength and resilience of a family united in love and remembrance.
