Coldplay’s Eco-Friendly Album: Music from River Plastic in Collaboration with The Ocean Cleanup
Coldplay, known for their environmental advocacy, has announced their upcoming album, Moon Music. This release will feature a limited edition vinyl record crafted from plastic collected from rivers, specifically the Rio Las Vacas in Guatemala. This innovative project is a collaboration with the Dutch non-profit organization, The Ocean Cleanup, dedicated to purging oceans and waterways of plastic waste.
A Musical Mission
The special edition of Moon Music embodies the band’s commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness. The vinyl records are produced using plastic debris intercepted by The Ocean Cleanup’s systems, primarily from river sources. This aligns perfectly with the rising trend of conscious consumerism and the renewed popularity of vinyl records.
The Ocean Cleanup’s Role
The Ocean Cleanup, founded by Boyan Slat, focuses on preventing plastic pollution from reaching the oceans. While their most notable efforts include addressing the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, they also deploy their technology in river systems, which are significant conduits of plastic waste to the oceans.
In 2023, their Interceptor 006 system was deployed in the Rio Las Vacas to capture plastic waste before it entered the Gulf of Honduras. This collected plastic has been sorted, blended, and transformed into the limited edition Moon Music vinyl. The final product comprises 70% river plastic and 30% recycled plastic bottles from other sources.
Coldplay’s Contribution
Coldplay’s involvement with The Ocean Cleanup extends beyond their new album. The band financially supports the non-profit’s operations and sponsors Interceptor 005 in Malaysia’s Klang River. During their record-breaking Music of the Spheres tour, Coldplay also amplified The Ocean Cleanup’s mission, reaching millions of fans worldwide.
Boyan Slat expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting how the captured plastic has been repurposed creatively. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that intercepted plastic never re-enters the marine environment, seeing this project as a step towards achieving their goal of plastic-free oceans.
Innovative and Impactful
The limited edition Notebook Edition LP is not just a musical release but a statement of innovation and environmental responsibility. It signifies a successful collaboration between a global music icon and a pioneering environmental organization. This initiative not only raises awareness about plastic pollution but also demonstrates practical solutions to repurpose waste.
Looking Forward
Coldplay’s Moon Music is set to release on October 4th, offering fans not just new music but an opportunity to support a crucial environmental cause. The band’s dedication to sustainability, combined with The Ocean Cleanup’s technological prowess, exemplifies how creative collaborations can drive significant environmental impact.
