Dogs Become Service Animals for God – Working as Staff in 900-Year-old Historic Abbey

In Gloucestershire, England, two black Labradors, Eric and Florence, have become official “assistant vergers” at the historic 900-year-old Tewkesbury Abbey. Their journey began when their owner, Chris Skepper, the head verger of the abbey, needed to bring them to work while his family was away. Initially a temporary arrangement, Eric and Flo were so well-received by staff and visitors alike that they became permanent members of the abbey’s team.

Now regulars at the abbey, the dogs assist by providing a warm, welcoming atmosphere and even serve as therapy animals for visitors. During services, they lie quietly on mats and help ease the apprehension of newcomers to the church. Their presence has broken down barriers, making the abbey feel more accessible to those unfamiliar with religious spaces.

Chris explains that Labradors are bred to work and that Eric and Flo are dedicated to their new roles, proudly donning name badges and enthusiastically performing their duties. Visitors to Tewkesbury Abbey can meet these friendly canine “staff members” during the abbey’s opening hours.
