Four National Guardsmen Save Man’s Life After Stopping for Lunch in Poland

A routine lunch break in Poland turned into a lifesaving mission for four Massachusetts National Guardsmen. While deployed for a NATO training exercise, the soldiers were eating at a restaurant when a man at a nearby table began choking. Without hesitation, Staff Sgt. Nathan Cyr performed the Heimlich maneuver, dislodging the obstruction and saving the man’s life while his comrades ensured the area was clear and called for emergency support.

The quick reaction was a direct result of the extensive medical training all soldiers receive. The team’s calmness under pressure in a foreign country highlights the everyday readiness of military personnel, even during off-duty moments. The incident strengthened the bond between the US servicemembers and the local Polish community, who expressed deep gratitude for their presence and actions.

The rescued man, a local Polish citizen, thanked his rescuers profusely. The Guardsmen, humbled by the event, emphasized that they were simply in the right place at the right time and that anyone with training would have done the same. The story is a powerful testament to the value of first aid knowledge and the global role of servicemembers as helpers.
