Honoring a Legacy: 88-Year-Old Foster Mom Retires After Raising Over 40 Children

A Lifetime of Dedication

Emma Patterson, an 88-year-old foster mom from Maryland, recently received special recognition for her extraordinary contributions to the foster care system. This remarkable woman, who began fostering children in the 1980s, has opened her heart and home to over 40 children in Montgomery County. Now, as she announces her retirement from fostering, her decades of service and dedication are being celebrated.

Beginning of a Foster Journey

Patterson’s journey into fostering began unexpectedly. Her involvement started when her own two children began bringing home friends who needed assistance. Whether it was providing food, warm clothes, or a safe place to stay after school, Patterson was always ready to help. This compassionate response to children in need laid the foundation for her future in foster care.

At the time, Patterson had recently separated from her children’s father and was balancing multiple jobs, including working at a local university and a retail job. Despite the challenges, she never hesitated to support the children who came into her care. This unwavering commitment led her to officially register her home in White Oak, Maryland, with the Montgomery County foster home system.

A Home for Many

Over the years, Patterson’s home became a sanctuary for countless children, including infants born with drug addictions who could not return to their parents. At times, she cared for up to nine children simultaneously, some of whom stayed with her until they reached adulthood. Her nurturing environment and steadfast support helped these children thrive.

Patterson’s exceptional service did not go unnoticed. A spokesperson for Montgomery County confirmed to ABC News that she is one of the county’s most experienced and long-serving foster parents. Her dedication and love have profoundly impacted the lives of many children, providing them with the stability and care they desperately needed.

A Humble Hero

Despite her incredible contributions, Patterson remains humble about her role. “This wasn’t something that I ever thought anybody paid attention to. You know, I didn’t do it for the purpose of anybody giving me any recognition,” she told ABC News. “It was always a situation where it was just a boy or girl that didn’t have anybody to care anything about them. And they needed a place to sleep or something to eat.”

Celebrating Her Legacy

Patterson’s retirement marks the end of an era, but her legacy lives on through the children she has helped raise. “I’m very proud of all of the children because, you know, they all have just turned out to be just wonderful human beings,” she said, reflecting on her years of fostering. Her story is a testament to the profound impact one person can have on the lives of many.

Inspiring Future Generations

Emma Patterson’s story is part of ABC News’ “America Strong” segment, which celebrates extraordinary individuals who make a difference in their communities. Her journey inspires current and future foster parents, demonstrating the power of kindness, commitment, and love.

As we honor Emma Patterson’s incredible achievements, we are reminded of the importance of fostering and the difference it can make in a child’s life. Her unwavering dedication has left an indelible mark on the foster care system and the countless lives she has touched.
