Ireland Shuts Last Coal Plant, Becomes 15th Coal-Free Nation in Europe
In a landmark moment for green energy, Ireland has officially closed its final coal-fired power station, the Moneypoint plant in County Clare, completing its transition to renewable power. The 915-megawatt facility, which once supplied 25% of Ireland’s electricity, has been replaced by a combination of offshore wind farms, solar arrays, and battery storage systems.
Why This Matters:
• Carbon emissions drop by 2.3 million tons annually
• 90% of Ireland’s power now comes from renewables (wind leads at 42%)
• Creates 5,000+ jobs in clean energy sectors
“Today, we’ve unshackled ourselves from 19th-century technology,” said Energy Minister Eamon Ryan. Ireland joins 14 other European nations (including Belgium and Austria) in abandoning coal entirely.
