Medical Marvel: UCLA Team Performs World’s First Successful Human Bladder Transplant
In a 15-hour marathon surgery, a UCLA team led by Dr. Shiri Raz achieved what was once deemed impossible: transplanting a fully functional bladder into 34-year-old spinal injury patient Daniel Rivera.
The breakthrough technique:
- Harvested a donor bladder with its intact vasculature
- Reconnected microscopic nerves and arteries
- Used stem cell gel to prevent rejection
Rivera, who relied on catheters for 12 years, can now urinate normally. “This restores dignity,” says Dr. Raz. The procedure paves the way for transplanting other non-vital organs, potentially helping millions with bladder cancer or birth defects.
