Philadelphia Phillies’ New Service Dog Steals Hearts, Will Soon Support a Veteran

The Philadelphia Phillies have welcomed their newest team member—a golden retriever puppy named “Slider”—who is training to become a service dog for a veteran after spending the 2024 season charming fans at Citizens Bank Park. The initiative, in partnership with Paws for Purple Hearts, aims to raise awareness for veterans’ mental health while providing socialization training for the future assistance dog.

Slider’s Journey:

  • Attends home games in a tiny Phillies jersey, learning to stay calm amid crowds
  • Practices commands in the bullpen during batting practice
  • Will graduate this fall to assist a veteran with PTSD or mobility challenges

“He’s already a home run for morale,” said manager Rob Thomson. Fans can follow Slider’s progress on the team’s social media, where he’s become a viral sensation.
