Rare Giant Antarctic Squid Filmed Alive for First Time

National Geographic’s deep-sea expedition captured astonishing footage of a 14-foot Antarctic colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) – a species previously known only from carcasses. The submersible team observed:

🦑 Bioluminescent skin displays (likely communication attempts)
🐋 Scarring from epic battles with sperm whales
🔍 Unprecedented hunting behavior footage

“This changes everything we knew about deep-sea ecosystems,” says marine biologist Dr. Alan McCormick. The 23-minute encounter will air in NatGeo’s Secrets of the Antarctic Abyss this fall.
