Rare Yangtze Porpoises Successfully Reintroduced in Major Conservation Win

Two captive-bred Yangtze finless porpoises – among just 1,000 remaining – have thrived for six months post-release in a landmark effort by Chinese conservationists. The operation involved:

🐬 18-month habitat acclimation in netted river sections
📡 Satellite tags monitoring social integration
🚤 Fishermen trained as protection patrols

“This proves captive breeding can work for critically endangered cetaceans,” says Dr. Wei Zhang. The next release cohort includes a pregnant female – potential hope for reversing the species’ decline.
