Santiago Bernabeu Stadium’s Ingenious Underground Greenhouse for Retractable Grass Field

Real Madrid’s iconic Santiago Bernabeu Stadium has undergone a remarkable transformation with state-of-the-art renovations, including a retractable roof and an astonishing retractable field. Yes, you read that correctly. When the European champions are not playing, the entire natural grass pitch is moved underground into a four-story greenhouse for preservation and maintenance.

A Groundbreaking Engineering Feat

The stadium, often referred to as the cathedral of soccer, underwent five active years of renovations, starting in 2017, at a total cost of €1.17 billion. Among the notable features of the renovation is the retractable roof, spanning 28,000 m², and a retractable pitch of 8,000 m². This innovative system allows the stadium to be utilized year-round, regardless of weather conditions.

The Marvel of the Underground Greenhouse

The retractable pitch system was unveiled to fans with a playful twist when images were shared on social media showing the stadium without a pitch and a giant hole in the floor. The underground greenhouse, equipped with ventilation, climate control, lighting, monitoring, and irrigation systems, ensures optimal conditions for turf preservation. The turf is bathed in UV growing lights for 14 hours and routinely watered until game day, maintaining its pristine condition.

Efficiency and Sustainability

While the system undoubtedly showcases incredible engineering prowess, it also brings efficiency and sustainability benefits. By preventing the sun from drying out the pitch, water savings are maximized, ensuring that the turf remains lush and green. Moreover, the preservation system is entirely contained within the stadium’s existing floorplan, occupying no external space—a testament to its ingenuity.

Cutting-Edge Technology and Fan Experience

In addition to the groundbreaking turf preservation system, the stadium boasts a new 360° LCD screen suspended from the roof—a first of its kind in a European stadium. This screen displays multiple content zones simultaneously, enhancing the fan experience with live video, instant replays, statistics, graphics, animations, and sponsorship messages.

A Stadium for Everyone

The renovations have increased the stadium’s capacity to 85,000, with a full suite of accessibility and disabled seating infrastructure. Real Madrid ensures that everyone, regardless of ability, can enjoy the excitement of the game from arguably the most famous seats in soccer.
