Sixteen-year-old Grace Sun from Lexington, Kentucky, has achieved an extraordinary feat by winning first prize at the prestigious Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. Pioneering Research on Bioelectronic Implants

Currently, OECTs suffer from performance and stability issues, particularly within the human body. “They have instability in the body. You don’t want some sort of implanted bioelectronic to degrade in your body,” Sun explained to Business Insider. Her research focuses on making these devices more reliable, ensuring they can perform consistently without degrading over time.
Transformative Potential
OECTs have the potential to revolutionize the way we detect and monitor diseases. These sensitive devices can detect proteins or nucleic acids in bodily fluids, identifying diseases in their earliest stages. This technology could replace invasive implants like pacemakers and offer innovative ways to track biomarkers such as blood glucose levels, white blood cell counts, and blood-alcohol content. Such advancements could be life-changing for individuals with autoimmune diseases, epilepsy, or diabetes.

Ian Jandrell, a judging co-chair for the materials science category at ISEF, expressed high praise for Sun’s project. “This was our number one project, without a shadow of a doubt,” Jandrell told Business Insider. “It was crystal clear that that room was convinced that this was a significant project and worthy of consideration for a very top award because of the contribution that was made.”

Grace Sun’s ambitions extend beyond her award-winning research. She hopes to further develop OECTs and eventually start a business to bring these advanced devices to market.
