Teenage Swimmer Battles Jellyfish, Exhaustion to Complete 27-Mile Marathon Swim – May Soon Become Youngest to Finish All 7 Ocean Challenges
At just 17 years old, British swimmer Lottie Mills has already accomplished what most professional athletes never will – completing six of the world’s most grueling open water swims. Her latest achievement, a 27-mile crossing of the treacherous Molokai Channel in Hawaii, brought her one step closer to becoming the youngest person ever to complete the “Ocean’s Seven” challenge.
The swim was anything but smooth sailing. Mills faced brutal conditions from the start, battling 15-foot swells and strong currents that repeatedly pushed her off course. “About halfway through, I hit a massive swarm of box jellyfish,” Mills recalled. “I was getting stung every few strokes for nearly an hour.” Despite the pain, she pressed on, completing the crossing in just under 18 hours.
Her coach, former Olympic swimmer Mark Henderson, described it as “one of the most courageous performances I’ve ever witnessed.” The teenager now has just one challenge remaining – the 20-mile Cook Strait in New Zealand – to complete the prestigious Ocean’s Seven, which includes crossings like the English Channel and Catalina Channel.
What makes Mills’ accomplishments even more remarkable is that she trains while completing her A-level studies. “I swim before and after school, and do longer sessions on weekends,” she explained. Her ultimate goal is to inspire more young women to take up endurance sports. “People think teenagers can’t do these things, but we’re capable of so much more than society expects.”
