Tree Cover Expands Across U.S. Metropolitan Areas

A new Forest Service report reveals that urban tree canopy has increased in 60% of American counties since 2000. The growth stems from:

  • Municipal tree-planting initiatives
  • Reduced deforestation in suburban areas
  • Natural regeneration of abandoned lots

“Trees are making a comeback where people live,” said lead researcher Dr. Ellen Park. The findings counter assumptions about urban environmental decline.
